Setting Up Your Computer to Access Online Courses

Blackboard Learn and Vista are sophisticated interactive web applications with some specific technical requirements:

  • A supported web browser
  • Pop-ups enabled for Vista
  • The latest Java plugin

Once you think you have the above items configured properly, run the automated browser check and make sure!

Browsers

Blackboard supports several browsers for use with Learn and Vista. IT Support Services supports a few of these browsers:

  • On a PC running Windows XP, Vista, or 7 you should use Firefox 3.6 or higher or Internet Explorer 8.0 or above with all Windows Updates.
  • On a Macintosh running OS X you should use Firefox 3.6 or higher or Safari 4.0 or higher.
  • Please check the vendor website for the latest information on supported operating systems and browsers.

Pop-ups

Pop-up advertisements have caused many users to block pop-up windows on their computers using either a built-in feature of their web browser or possibly an add-in blocker like Yahoo! Toolbar, Google Toolbar.

Blackboard Vista uses pop-up windows for some of its best features, and so you must disable your pop-up blocking for the Vista server at least.

Java

Java is a free plug-in which allows Blackboard Learn and Vista to add interactivity and other functions to the online learning experience. Java Version 5.0 or higher is required to access the online course content. We recommend you download a new version if you experience any problems.
