A student view:
We do love our movies
by Lauren St. Pierre
Where do we turn when
the party scene has turned sour and all the activities that
we seem to do involve imbibing some sort of alcohol that
leaves us feeling as though our heads are going to roll right
off our shoulders? We are in college and this is
the time, so we are told.
After poking and
prodding at the inner psyche of students on campus I came to
one deduction, we love
movies. So does this mean that we don’t have the
imagination or the class to go to some indie art show or a
coffee house poetry reading? No, some do, but the majority
of those I spoke with identified going to the movies or
renting movies as the number one choice for an alcohol free
occasion.
It was not uncommon to
run into the occasional
bowling and
roller-skating answers. And who can deny that an all out
battle for top scores in
Dance Dance Revolution can be just as exhilarating as
doing it on a dance floor surrounded by sweaty drunk people.
It is also important
to look at the impending winter season. The weather is
changing and the trips to
Bidwell have been winding down. Our thoughts are moving
toward trips out of town; skiing in
Tahoe and shopping for Christmas gifts in San Francisco.
Perhaps what it comes
down to is comfort. A movie is a safe and social way to
forget about the D you got on your midterm earlier in the
week. Not to mention it is cheaper than paying the
combination of a cover at
La Salles with getting a drink containing alcohol that
doesn’t automatically guarantee a wicked hangover.
We may love our
parties but there is no denying that even the hardest
partier will be in line for
“The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” this winter.
