Taught at the University of North Carolina and the University of Florida. Worked at newspapers in Richmond, Ind.; Daytona Beach, Fla; and Melbourne, Fla.

Awards:
Outstanding Journalism Teacher of the Year at a Four-Year University by the California Newspaper Publishers Association,1998; Freedom Forum Teaching Fellowship; an Institute for Journalism Excellence Fellowship from the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

Course Specialties: Advanced Reporting, Copy Editing, Writing for Mass Media, Internet Newspapers and Magazines.

Research Interests: Mass media effects, journalism history, the development of the Black press in the United States, and journalism education.

Taught journalism courses and was assistant editor of research publications at Purdue University. Worked at newspapers in Los Alamos, N.M., Abilene, Texas, Ashland, Ore., Libby, Mont., Winnemucca, Nev., and Lafayette, Ind.

Awards:
Alan H. Monroe Scholar for excellence in professional research and scholarship, Purdue University; Bruce Kendall Award for excellence in teaching, Purdue University, 2004; outstanding teaching award from the International Communication Association, 2005.

Course Specialties:
Writing for Mass Media, Public Affairs Reporting, Copy Editing, Internet Newspapers and Magazines. Adviser to Chico State student chapter of Society of Professional Journalists.

Research Interests:
The interaction among media, technology and culture, with a heavy emphasis on the areas of journalism, newspapers, organizational rhetoric, public relations and corporate media ownership.

New York State Associated Press Association, AEJMC/Gannett Journalism Workshop on Teaching Fellowship, Andrews University Professor of the Year, Southern Utah University Multicultural Center Service Award.

Course Specialties:  
Intro to PR, Writing for PR, Mass Media Ethics. Adviser to Chico State student chapter of International Association of Business Communicators.

Research Interests:  
The management function of PR, ongoing training of PR practitioners and newspaper reporters, PR applications from Japanese/Chinese history, and diversity issues in mass media.

Course Specialties: Writing for Mass Media, Public Affairs Reporting, Advanced Reporting. Adviser to The Orion.

Research Interests: Writing, reporting, student diversity.
