Jan Ferris Heenan
Jan launched her newspaper career in the late 1970s. As editor of her junior high’s “Parks Panther Prints,” she reported the “Fox of the Month” column and penned editorials, including a prophetic excoriation of Proposition 13. At Chico State, Jan (painfully) rose through the ranks of The Orion to become editor -- in the waning days of manual paste-up. She was hired at The Paradise Post while still in college and went on to report at a number of papers, including The Sacramento Bee and the Chicago Tribune. Jan quit The Bee in 2000 and has freelanced for a variety of publications, from Sacramento Magazine to Publishers Weekly. She is happily married to Michael Heenan, and both are the exceptionally proud parents of Fiona, age 8, a budding writer.
Mitchell C. Naylor
Mitchell retired in 2006 after 25 years as an editor and political/social issues writer. He received a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1969 from Chico State, and a special studies master’s degree in mass communications, political science and sociology in 1974, with honors. He was active in student media, taught “Advanced Newspaper Production” as the founding (adjunct) Orion adviser, and led the faculty-student group to name the publication. In 1988, he received a master’s in history of consciousness from UC Santa Cruz. Mitchell has specialized in depth journalism and taught journalism and political science. He has won awards at national, regional and local levels. His areas of work are First Amendment freedoms; education; and agricultural and water issues. Mitchell plans to return to the north state area with his wife, Ginger, to write and teach.
Mark Stein
Mark wrote for The Orion in the ‘70s and is senior news editor of Condé Nast Magazines. He oversees news and analysis on Portfolio.com, the Web site of Condé Nast Portfolio. Previously, he was the deputy editor of the New York Times' Sunday Business section, where he edited cover stories and column by writers as diverse as Ben Stein, James Fallows, Randall Stross, and Denise Caruso. He also wrote a weekly business roundup column called Five Days. Earlier, Mark spent seven years as a senior editor in the London office of Bloomberg News, overseeing feature writing, investigations, and each day's top stories. He began his career at the Los Angeles Times, where he wrote about science and the environment and was a correspondent in the newspaper's San Francisco bureau. Mark received a bachelor’s degree in communication students from Chico State in 1979.
