Q. Prior to attending Chico State, did you have any writing experience or internships that related to journalism?

A. Yes. I wrote a couple of articles and many CD & book reviews for a national, full-color, glossy magazine called Magical Blend. I was also their national sales manager for seven years.

Q. Why did you choose to study at Chico State?

A. I heard they had an excellent journalism department and I love the small town atmosphere with plenty of 'civilization'.

Q. Why did you choose journalism as your major?

A. I like working with people, meeting deadlines and having excellent writing skills. Plus, I'm a news junkie and want to influence the mass media.

Q. What is your minor?

A. Sociology. I like learning about the trends and motivations in our society.

Q. What misconceptions about your journalism major (that your coursework has now cleared up, of course) did you have before you entered the program?

A. The fact that newspapers are losing a massive amount of financial ground to the Internet. Yet the Internet still hasn't figured out how to make money from Web-based news sites.

Q. What do you hope to do with your degree?

A. I hope to have a large influence on the news and information that the public is exposed to, in order to improve the functioning of our democratic society.

Q. What skills do you think you need to get there?

A. Reporting and research skills, as well as learning the ins & outs of media organizations.

Q. What are your perceptions of the future of journalism?

A. It's all going toward the Web. But they have to make money from news sites. They also have to make the Web more portable and easier to view. Like cell phone watches with an expandable viewing screen (my idea), and improved home TV-screen-compatible Internet devices like MSN-TV2.
