Dawn
Letner offers one piece of advice to make that first batch as
good for you as it was for her. She says it's important to have
a mental attitude along the lines of "relax and have a homebrew."
The biggest problem that she sees with first-time brewers is
that they get so busy with making the beer that they forget
to stop and smell the hops. The other problem she sees is that
often people will "have a few too many brews while they are
brewing" and forget to add ingredients or not add ingredients
altogether.
Technically
speaking, Letner said most people who don't get the right results
neglect to read and follow the instructions. One aspect of brewing
that she said to not underestimate is keeping all of the equipment
clean. She said that although one teaspoon of Iodophor sanitizer
is recommended, "there is no substitute for carefully washing
everything, scrubbing everything used in the process with dishwashing
detergent."
Letner
says that brewing is like everything else. She encourages people
to take their time.
"If
you pay attention, you will be a success," she said. "But if
you are not a success right off the bat, don't be discouraged."
