What is binge drinking?

Binge drinking is consuming five or more drinks per occasion.

Why do students binge drink?

It isn't hard to be motivated to binge drink when in certain environments and situations. My friends and I have many personal reasons for partaking in this activity.

Students have a variety of reasons they are motivated to binge drink. One reason is that alcohol is a tension reliever. The subordination of the individual to society generates tension. Tension is painful and demands relief. This demand creates two problems: the problem of reducing conditions that create tension and the problem of relieving tension itself. Instead of fixing root causes, the individual turns to alcohol.

Not only does alcohol relieve tension, but it also helps people escape the reality of their daily lives. Binge drinking is a quick way for students, who at the end of the week are feeling a great deal of stress, to forget their rigorous schedules and term papers and to enjoy time with friends.

But there are downsides. Click on links to learn more about the effects of binge drinking.
