How much time and money?

The time you put into flying will depend on the training you decide to take. The best thing about starting your training at a local flight school is that you can do ground instruction, fly and study when it is convenient for you.

The minimal amount of time needed to complete your training is as follows:

  • 40 hours of flight time (20 hours must be with your instructor)
  • 20 hours/ground instruction
  • 1 1/2 hours for "check ride"

Most often students find themselves with at least 60 hours of flight time before doing the final check ride, but it will vary depending on the person and the time they have to dedicate to flying.

It doesn't just take time to learn to fly. You'll need money, too. The amount of money you decide to pay for your training is ultimately up to you.

Pacific Flight Services estimates that a private pilot rating will cost about $3,600.

The cost for the rental of the airplane is:

  • Cessna 152 $55/hr
  • Cessna 172 $67/hr
  • Cessna 182 $110/hr

Other fees include:

  • Instructor fee: $25/h
  • Jeppesen Private Pilot Kit: includes textbook, syllabus, study guide and logbook $150
  • Written exam fee: $80
  • Examiner fee for final "check ride": $250
