Glossary of Cooking and
Dining Terms
(For college students)
1. Casserole - The contents of a three-week-old Tupperware container:
half pasta and half Uncle Ben's rice.
2. Breakfast
- Cereal with milk that expired two days ago (after a good sniffing,
of course).
3. Three-course
meal - Top Ramen, microwave corn dogs and the remaining crumbs in
a Doritos bag found between the cushions of the couch.
4. Healthy
- Using half a tablespoon less butter in the Macaroni and Cheese. A
veggie deluxe pizza also qualifies.
5. Fine Dining
- Getting your Big Mac meal Super-sized.
6. Au Jus
- Accidentally spilling your Pale Ale on your dinner.
7. A la Carte
- French for eating food in Safeway before you get to the checkout counter.
8. Sautéed
- Synonymous with burned.
9. Sizzle
- Also synonymous with burn.
10. Midnight
snack - Stopping by Scrappy Dog after last call.
11. Frappe
- Another French term for a thoroughly destroyed attempt at cooking
enchiladas.
12. Appetizer
- An ice-cold beer, of course.
13. Dessert
- Dislodging a nice morsel of this afternoon's deli sandwich from your
teeth.
14. Ethnic
food - Food traditionally served in foreign countries. For example,
Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.
15. Balanced
diet - The rationale that one banana will negate a semesters-worth
of eating microwave burritos.
16. Four
food groups - These are the basic daily intake necessary for students
to get through college. They are: three servings of vending machine
food (anything will do), two servings of deep-fried chicken, a spoonful
of peanut butter and eight to ten servings of Budweiser.
17. Green
vegetables - This is another phrase for moldy French fries.
18.
Tupperware
- A pot of fettuccine Alfredo with a fork sticking out and a plate placed
on top.
19. Romantic
dinner - This is when you invite your significant other over
for popcorn and to watch "The Wedding Singer."
20. Hearty
meal - When you actually feel your arteries being clogged by
39-cent-hamburger Sundays at McDonald's.
