For most cooking, only a few basic utensils are necessary. As far as pots and pans go, it's essential to have at least one frying pan and a few medium-sized pots. The number and type of cooking tools one owns is really a matter of personal choice. Many recipes require only a spoon, fork or knife for their preparation. Others require more exotic tools such as a "garlic press" or a "spatula." Below are two lists of kitchen
tools. One list is mandatory (as in you need them or else failure is
imminent) and the other is optional (meaning failure is probably still
imminent).
Cooking is made easier with
some of the optional utensils, but you can probably get by without them.
For example, instead of using a cheese grater, you can just slice cheese
thinly with a knife (who woulda' thunk?) Serving bowls work just as
well as real mixing bowls and you can scrape skin from vegetables with
a knife instead of using a vegetable peeler! You can even use a fork
rather than a wire whisk to beat eggs! You get the idea.
