On the necessity of a free Internet press...

Journalists try. They try really hard.

Still, do you ever feel like you're not getting the full story

  Well, you're not.
Even if you have utter faith in your favorite news source, you must admit there are times when the story just doesn't get through. Logistically, it's probably impossible to present every story anyway. But some say that certain stories are left out intentionally.

Those that study mass media watch the corporate consolidation of media ownership with a wary eye. Understand the problem: The same corporation that controls a news source may control other interests, interests that is does not want reported on.

Here's an example. In Atlanta, the major newspaper is owned by the same corporation that owns the Coca-Cola company. Coke has headquarters in Atlanta. In the early '90s, journalists at the major newspaper began to report on unfair employment practices at Coke headquarters. The journalists were actively censored by their editors.

The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers. Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)

If the news ideal, at root, is an informed citizenry, news outlets locked into corporate servitude will not live up to that ideal. They are there to serve the corporations not the citizenry.

There is enough injustice and unnecessary tragedy on a daily basis that seeking the truth can be a dreary business. If you prefer your politics delivered with a wink and a grin, check out Michael Moore at http://michaelmoore.com.

Moore has an absolute gift for highlighting the absurd in modern politics. He has also directed and participated in some super-cool videos with Rage Against the Machine. The videos are available at his Web site, as well.

Tired of surfing? Want someone else to do it for you? Give Alternet.org at http://www.alternet.org/  your e-mail address and they will send you weekly headline links to the best of the alternative press.

There are some citizens out there working hard to bring you the truth, but it doesnít mean these folks have all the answers. Theyíll be the first to tell you that. The whole truth is probably impossible to know. But maybe balanced against the five, soon-to-be-four, soon-to-be three corporate news outlets, our picture is getting clearer.

Please adjust your set.
