American Club

British Universities North American Club is an organization that provides working adventures worldwide for students, graduates and others that meet the requirements for a working visa. There are three main programs: Work Australia, Work Britain and Work New Zealand.

The length of stay can be as short as one month or as long as one year depending on where you are going and the requirements of the visa. BUNAC will take care of obtaining the visa and all of the travel arrangements.

The major appeal of this program is that you can get any job you want.

Amanda Summerscales is the U.S. programs coordinator for BUNAC. She said that this is a great way to gain experience to put on your resume while living in another country.

"About 20 percent of our participants actually take career-type positions, and the rest work in typical vacation jobs," Summerscales said.

She said that while you are not given a job upon arrival, there are many different possibilities, and the majority have no problem finding a job they like fairly quickly.

BUNAC is not responsible for supporting you if you don't find a job. That is why it makes the requirement that you must have at least $700 saved in a bank account before you leave. This is to provide some security the first few weeks after arrival.

Sandra Janky graduated from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo last fall.  She then spent six months living and working in Great Britain. She lived 40 miles outside of London and bartended at a traditional village pub. She made more than enough money to live comfortably and travel.

"Not only did I love my job, I got to travel for six weeks to Scotland, Ireland, France, Holland, Germany, Italy and Austria," Janky said. "I never imagined I would be able to say I have seen all of these countries."

She said that although she was homesick for the first few weeks, by the end she didn't want to leave.
