Get lost on the coast

The Lost Coast is a nature lover's dream come true.

With 46 miles of barely touched beaches and rocky shores, this majestic stretch along the Northern California coast will capture your heart.

The steep, windy roads leading to this wonderland are treacherous, but well worth it. After about 6 hours from Chico, you will find yourself isolated on the coast.

And what really makes this trail great is that you can bring your best friend. Dogs are allowed on all stretches of the trail with the understanding that the hiker will clean up after their pooch and keep them under control.

Sea lions bask in the sun offshore and can sometimes be seen relaxing on the beach. Don't be surprised if you wake up one morning to a herd of cattle grazing around the edges of your tent. Farms are located on the other side of the cliff, so the cows pretty much have the run of place.

If you're planning your Lost Coast adventure in the early spring, keep in mind that this is the time when the ticks come out to play. If you're not careful, you could spend your entire trip battling these 6-legged beasts one at a time.

This small piece of heaven hidden along the coast is an ideal destination for beginners and experts alike. Don't forget to bring plenty of water. A reliable water filter is also helpful as fresh water streams can be scarce.

Look out for any slithering friends that might be hanging out under driftwood or rocks which can often double as comfortable chairs. Rattle snakes have been known to hang out around these parts.

The trail's longevity lies in the hands and below the feet of the people who use it, so remember to take out everything that you brought in. Go the extra mile and make sure that other hikers are doing their best to keep the trail clean.
