Backpacking 101
| It's
amazing what a walk in the woods can do to some people. Whether you are
an experienced backpacker or a curious camper, Chico State University's
backpacking class has something for you.
Not sure how to get started? You can learn the backpacking essentials right here on campus. Anna Treanor has been teaching students backpacking basics for the past 2 years. Treanor is passionate about the wilderness and enjoys teaching others how to use and respect our most valuable resource. Treanor explained why she is drawn to the outdoors. "Life feels satisfying. My body feels effective, I have trekked to where I am, and I have carried all that I need with me," said Treanor. The backpacking class teaches students wilderness ethics, cooking, mountaineering and first aid, to name a few. Treanor said the most important thing to remember is that the wilderness is a gift. Even when the weather sucks, the trail is overgrown, the ground is uneven and the tent is leaking, the wilderness is still a nice place to be. It is also a precious gift that should always be revered and respected. Treanor said she learned something very important about the Earth while hiking the Marble Mountains. "A very wise man said, 'Don't let the rain spoil what is otherwise a beautiful day.' " So what are you waiting for? Go take a hike. |
