How long will garlic last?
Garlic will last about
one year from the time it 's harvested. It 's harvested from late June
through August. It lasts the longest in a braid.
How
do you use a garlic braid and why is it more expensive than by the pound?
The braid is used from
the top down, one bulb at a time is needed and can be cut with scissors.
It 's more expensive because there is at least 20 minutes of hand labor
involved in making one braid. Also, it 's more of a decoration and gift
item.
What is the best way to keep garlic?
Garlic needs cool dry
air; it doesn't keep well in the refrigerator because of the moisture.
It keeps longest in the braid because moisture can't get down into the
bulb because the stem is still attached. Garlic keepers are good (the ones
with air holes) and so are wire baskets or a paper bag. Garlic can also
be kept by peeling about three of four heads of garlic, putting them in
a food processor or blender with one cup of oil, then storing it in the
refrigerator or freezer and it keeps for a month and ready for use.
How do you grow garlic?
The cloves are planted
pointed side up in the fall. It 's then watered and fertilized until about
one month before harvest, then the watering is stopped and the stem is
allowed to dry. When the stem is dry, the bulb is loosened from the soil
and pulled out. Let the bulbs dry out for one week or so then tie and hang
up.
What is the difference between
Early garlic and Elephant garlic?
Early garlic There are about
four or five cloves in each head and it has a yellowish color. The flavor
is very mild - somewhere between onion and garlic. Elephant garlic is not
for the true garlic lover.
