"Where Jens Gather"
an interview with Jen Hammond,
co-creator of Jen Central

Q: What caused you to create Jen Central?

A: I felt like there might be an underrepresentation of the greatness of such a name. Just kidding. There are an awful lot of people who have great home pages out there that never get seen because they aren't about typical popular items on the internet, like porn and drugs. I wanted some web talent to be seen, and it seemed like a great category to start collecting people under.

Q: What kinds of reactions from Jens or from non-Jens have your received?

A: Most Jens absolutely gush over the fact that they are given attention just for their name. Even those without web pages leave me great messages to urge me to keep this going. Non-Jens who give any reaction at all tend to be men, and either have hooked up with a Jen in the past or are looking to try to meet one on the Net. The latter is a bit sad, but the former tend to have nothing but great things to say and I love to hear about people who are nice Jens.

Q: What kind of impact has being named Jennifer had on you?

A: It's really frustrating hearing your name called out loud in crowds and hallways. It has made me want to change my name so many times. But then I recognize our sisterhood, you know?

Q: What impacts do you think Jennifers feel as a whole?

A: I think it's neat to meet someone with my name. Even if I never say something, if my waitress is named Jen, I'll smile and be extra nice. Maybe it's a whole solidarity type of thing we feel. But we have all felt so angry with our parents for choosing common names.

Q: Do you think this phenomenon could ever happen again with another girl or boy name?

A: Absolutely. It doesn't take long for a fad to take hold. All it takes is many people admiring someone with a name and then you have a million people running around with the same name. It would be interesting to study how these phenomenon occur and why.

Q: What do you think triggered the popularity in the '70s and '80s of the name Jennifer?

A: You know, I'm 18, so I'm not really sure. There sure were a lot of famous Jennifers in that time though.

Q: What would your name be if you could have chosen it? How unique would it be?

A: I would definitely leave it the same. It is me. It's how I think of myself. Although the non-uniqueness of being a Jennifer isn't great at times, it's something you grow into. And then there is always something to be said about never having your name mispronounced.

Q: What, if anything, has affected you by the response you have received from Jen Central?

A: I really didn't expect there to be that huge of a response, to get that many visitors or responses in the guestbook. What started as a whim and collection has become this huge list of names. It's sort of cool to see how something can bring people together to one place.
