My brother and I have a theory. It's a bit complex
to really get into but here is the gist of it: We believe human
beings are eventually going to evolve into aliens, and we believe
that computers are playing a big part in the evolution process.
Our eyes are getting larger, and they're glassing
over from staring at the screen for long periods of time. Our
ears are shrinking because we don't need to listen to people as
much. Our mouths are shrinking because we don't need to speak
to people as much. Our skin is getting pale because we hardly
leave the house anymore. Our fingers are getting longer because
we type so much, and because our thumbs are hardly used for typing
they will eventually fall off.
We will soon look like pale, ear-less, mouth-less creatures
with four long fingers on each hand and huge eyes that resemble computer
screens.
Of course this theory is difficult to prove
and neither my brother nor I have no intentions
on doing so. However, it is a new theory that many people spend
way too much time on the Internet. In fact, 6 percent of users
are classified as Internet addicts. According to Psychologist
Dr. Keith Ashcroft, one in 10 users spends more than 400 minutes
per day online searching things such as music, games and their
soul mates. These people alienate themselves from the outside
world by using the Internet excessively for chatting, gaming,
gambling, shopping and engaging in cyber relations.
How serious of a problem is this? Very, according
to some experts. People are losing their jobs, their marriages
and their lives as they spend more and more time online. Is Internet
addiction a problem in itself or does the Internet simply provide
access to established addictions?
