The Epicenter is still in its infancy,
but in a short existence, it has made its mark on the local music
scene.
Originally an offshoot of Soundsource
Music, this concert hall/rental room is located directly upstairs
from the store.
Owner Chuck Mahan bought the place,
previously known as the Zocalo room, last year and wasted no time
in remodeling. The installation of a permanent sound system,
the building of a larger stage and steps to better soundproofing
have made a considerable difference in the quality of its shows.
Mahar turned operations over to Ryan
Sanders, who now books all bands and shows.
"I'm under 21, and there's nowhere I
can see a show in town," Sanders said.
The Epicenter serves as a venue for
many up-and-coming bands of all styles, and has become a haven for
many Metal/Hardcore punk bands due to the lack of venues that support
these styles in town.
"I really want to start doing more booking
and less pay-to-play kind of stuff so that we can get more bands
to start playing and get attendance up," Sanders said.
Featuring "New Band Nights" twice a
month, the people at the Epicenter are definitely interested in
helping the music community grow, and Sanders said that he won't
ever forget the younger music crowd.
"I always want this to be an all-ages
venue where the focus is definitely on the music," he said.
