Accommodations

Finding a place to stay that is decent and inexpensive isn't always easy, even on the Internet.

Sites that list accommodations often only list hotels, leaving less expensive accommodations such as motels and hostels out entirely.

People can access these resources by typing key words into search engines.

If you know the name of the motel or hotel you want to stay in, especially if it is a big chain, you can often type in that name followed by .com and bring up its Web site. This works for Super 8 and Motel 6, both of which have directories for finding motels in specific cities.

Reservations can be made online, or toll free numbers are provided so people can call for reservations.

If you're looking to stay outdoors, campground sites can be a good way to find a place to stay. Using search engines, people can access numerous campground sites, many of which are for a specific campground. Unfortunately, many seem to be in France.

However, there are also some comprehensive sites. One is campsiterentals.com, which allows you to search for campsites via province/state. But, this site is limited. Typing in California, for example, brings up no results and suggests broadening the search. Leaving "search all" in the box brings up Web sites mostly in New England and Ontario, Canada.

A better site is gocampingamerica.com. This site allows the same type of search, only with a clickable map. Pick the state you want, and a listing of various campsites and RV parks will come up. Clicking on one brings up contact information, a description of the site if available, and a list of available amenities, such as phone hookups and group facilities. It also gives the dates of operation, and whether the campground has tent sites. The last is important because the sites found at this Web site are geared specifically to RV campers. Tent campers need to know if they can still stay there.
