There are many travel opportunities available through campus programs. Gina Raiola did a transfer program for a semester in Florence, Italy through the International Programs Office at Chico State. When her semester was done, she traveled for two more weeks. To find more information about travel programs through school, go to room 211 in Tehama Hall. There is a shelf of fliers about programs in almost every country. Chelsey Piasentin, 21, is the student assistant in the foreign language and literature office at Chico State. Last summer she took a month-long summer course in Italy through the foreign language department. For less than $3,000, she was able to fly, stay, eat and travel through northern Italy, not to mention the tuition for the three transferable units. |

"Getting there through that program enabled me to see all the art and history of the country for a very low price. Also, you don't even have to speak the language to get around there," Piasentin said. For more travel program information on Italy, Germany, France and Spain, log on to http://www.csuchico.edu/flng. There are also dozens of program fliers posted in the department building on the first floor of Trinity Hall at Chico State. Any last minute tips? "Bring clothes you can wash in the sink and then hang-dry," Six said. It's hard to find places to wash clothes, and this method saves money. Another travel hint Brooks passed along was to travel at night. "That way you can sleep on the train, and you don't have to pay for a hotel." It's not the same as starting the day showered and refreshed, but as Stacey Gordon, 24, a Chico State alumna said about her Europe experience. "After a little while, we didn't even care how greasy we looked because everyone there is doing the same thing. Our ferry ride to Greece took so long that we couldn't shower for three days. It's just something you get over. It's very worth it." Not everyone has the couple spare years it would take to visit all the places worth seeing in Europe. But there are some spots that should be placed at the top of everyone's "not to miss" list, even if you only have two weeks. Here are some places student travelers recommend. Let's start at the top, north that is: Amsterdam: The Heineken Brewery Tour, Anne Frank House London: Westminster-Abbey, Buckingham Palace Paris, France: The Louvre, Eiffel Tower Barcelona, Spain: Pamplona: The running of the bulls Florence, Italy: Uffizzi Gallery, the Duomo (a famous cathedral) Vienna, Germany: Mike's Bike Tours |
