"There were only a few hundred cams out there when I went online with my cam and most of them were family room cams, outdoor cams and some research cams."

The world is watching:
Chico State live online

By Tim Lewin

Web cameras are getting more and more popular on the Internet, and now Chico State University alumni who want to check out the weather on campus, or parents who want to make an appointment to see their children, can do so with images updated as fast as every five seconds.
There are at least four Web cameras watching Chico State students inside and outside, so if the thought of Big Brother is disturbing, checking out these sites could help students try and avoid being seen on the Internet.
Despite the growing trend in Web cams, there is really no purpose in having one set up. Most of the people who set up cameras at Chico State just wanted to see how easy it was to do. Chris Ficken of the Instructional Media Center just wanted to have a window. Computer science major Mike Kelly needed a project, and found he was able to hook up a computer lab to the Internet without spending a dime.
The newest campus Web cam at Chico State can be found in a student's room.  "Madman," as he is known on the Internet, is a sophomore at Chico State. His life is broadcast (every 30 seconds) via a Web cam through an experiment called WebDorm.  Along with other students across the country, "Madman" is learning what life is like when the world is watching.

Web cams everywhere, everywhere
Web cams are watching everything that moves and everything that doesn't

If watching the sunset in Santa Cruz or the traffic in New York City floats your boat, then following these links can take you on a superficial trip.
Just about anything is available to see live on the Internet. Live images of chameleons, discarded vegetables, growing mold and people riding in taxi cabs are available. There are Web cams sending images to the Internet at faster and faster speeds from all around the world.

There are also people who have found the explosion of Web cams to be the perfect opportunity to make a joke. Sites like "Rock" and "bohush.com" poke fun at the phenomenon. And at icepick.com, it isn't necessarily clear if the site is making fun of Web cams, or if the site is just taking them too far. But it is still fun enough to check out.

Sex cams....
See, it always pays to scroll to the bottom...

Forgetting sexually related Web cams in a story about Web cams would be like forgetting cranberry sauce on Thanksgiving.
A search on any search engine for "sex cams" can produce as many as 3,000 hits. Because many of these sites are pay-sites, it's necessary to filter through the mess. That's why it's helpful when people like Jason Dalie go through these sites and find which ones are worth while.
Dalie's site, among other things, has an e-mail joke service and a Web cam set on his pet cichlid. The site also has a list of nude web cams that he has taken the time to rate using loading time, image refreshing rate, his opinion of the looks of the subjects, favorable features and layout as criteria.
Dalie likes Web cams because of the variety of images they provide as he explained in an e-mail interview.
"Let me distill this a little. I like the ability to go from looking at some 'overgrown bush' to looking at someone's pet or a nice view from a resort," Dalie said.
Most of the sex cams on Dalie's site are teasers, luring surfers into paying for access to more explicit images. But most of the cameras at his site offer Web cams that are free, which is good for Web perverts who don't like to spend money.
"There were only a few hundred cams out there when I went online with my cam and most of them were family room cams, outdoor cams and some research cams. (Some of them were/are great spoofs on the cam phenomenon)" Dalie said. "However, almost as I caught the cam bug, it seemed as though someone realized that there was a money making potential."
