Free Music page 2 For those unaware of what the fuss is about, MP3 (Mpeg Layer 3) is the latest player in music technology. MP3 is a file format which stores audio files in a computer's hard drive, so that the song sounds near CD quality. The audio files are played by MP3 players like the popular Winamp, which was created by 20-year-old Justin Frankel and has been downloaded more than 10 million times. Gary Bongiovanni, Editor in Chief of Pollstar Magazine, a concert trade publication, said the music industry has lost millions of dollars in sales thanks to college students downloading MP3s and will continue to do so for years to come. "Are we concerned? No. Terrified? Yes," Bongiovanni said. "Let's face it, CDs are master recordings from which anyone can make MP3 files. "I suspect the multinationals will figure something out, but anyway you look at it, the recording industry landscape will be very different in 10 years," he said. With music available for free, one would assume the player would be as expensive as a CD player if not more. Fortunately, MP3 players can be downloaded for free at dozens of sites like MP3.Com. What's the catch? Well, there isn't one, except for maybe the small fact that having MP3s for an extended period of time may be illegal. Continue |
