Killer canines

The Net is a great place to learn about animals before deciding if they are the right pet for you. Some pets advertised on the Web are attractive in theory but may not be the perfect companion for you and your family. One of the controversial Internet pets is the hybrid wolf dog.

One of the most vocal opponents to wolf dog hybrids on the Web is K-9 officer and dog training video producer Ed Frawly. Frawly, who admittedly doesn't have an open mind on the subject, compares the breeding of dogs and wolves to Timothy McViegh's bomb attack in Oklahoma.

"It wasn't the fertilizer that was bad, nor was the diesel fuel bad. But the combination of the two created a terrible thing. It's the same with these animals. It's not the wolf that's bad, nor is it the dog that's bad. But combine them and you have a ticking time bomb."

Frawley's Web site includes a list of wolf dog attacks over the years and their outcomes. His advice is to never own or breed the hybrids because they are kid killers.

Wolf dog hybrid owners disagree with Frawley's hard-line opinion, but they do stress responsibility. The Wolf Dunn Web site was created as an educational site about cross breeds of wolf dogs. On the site's FAQ sheet the question about whether wolf dog hybrids make good pets was posed. According to some owners, wolf dogs make good companions, but their wild nature makes them difficult to own. One person named Beth wrote, "People 'own' pets, but you can never 'own' a wolf dog. You can provide for it, care for it and love it - but ultimately they make the decision whether or not to 'share' their soul with you."

The hybrid controversy prompted action in 1995 by the American Veterinarian Medical Association to strongly oppose the keeping of hybrid animals. Wolf dog breeders responded by forming groups like the United States American Wolf Dog Association.
