Society of Professional Journalists

The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation's largest journalism organization that includes more than 10,000 members in hundreds of chapters across America. Formed in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ works to encourage the freedom of the press and high levels of ethical behavior. SPJ's missions include protecting and promoting the First Amendment and inspiring and educating journalists.

The Orion

The Orion is Chico State's student-run newspaper. Founded in 1975, The Orion has won a cavalcade of awards over the years, including multiple Pacemaker Awards. The Orion was inducted into the Associated Collegiate Press Hall of Fame in 2005, and has won many other awards, such as the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Award and the National Newspaper Association General Excellence Award. The paper is completely self-sufficient and generates profit through advertising revenues. In 1994, The Orion was the first college newspaper to have a complete online edition.

Tehama Group Communications

Tehama Group Communications is Chico State's student-run public relations agency. The group is composed of account executives, photographers, graphic designers, social media experts, online communications directors and a general manager. Together, the team is able to produce a range of work for real clients in the school and the community, ranging from creating newsletters to organizing fundraisers to planning for a business's future. TGC was founded in 1990 and gives students an opportunity to have hands-on public relations experience.

International Association of Business Communicators

The International Association of Business Communicators is a worldwide organization that brings together professionals engaged in improving business through strategic communication. IABC was founded in 1970 and has more than 15,000 members across 80 countries. Members hold positions in a variety of industries, such as public relations, advertising, government relations, graphic design, photography and human resources.

The Poynter Institute

The Poynter Institute is a school for journalists. It offers online training, how-to's and occasional workshops and classes. The website houses a plethora of writing tools, help for journalists, journalism news and a variety of other resources.
