- Alpha Nu Chapter Meeting Minutes
April 16th, 2004
The Alpha Nu Chapter of
Kappa Delta Pi met in BMU 312 at 3:00 P.M. on
April 16th for a member meeting. The meeting was called to order by the
President. The
following officers were present:

BUSINESS
Call to Order: 3:03 P.M.
Old Business: * Spring Into Reading: Taking place
on Sunday!!! All volunteers must be there at noon! Anyone wishing to
volunteer is welcome!
New Business: * Pris Montgomery (CSUC Mathematics
Faculty) and Katie Early
(Citrus Elementary):
- Activity: Guess the birthday (binary
puzzle).
- Mathlinks Announcement (MATH
051A and 051B): Applications
for next semester's tutors are due the week after next. You are paid to
work at underfunded schools while attending once-a-week seminars to
learn games, standards, and assessment techniques regarding mathematics.
- Activity: The Great Tug
of War:
Grannies, Ivan, and the Acrobats
- Discussion:
- Typical textbooks focus on algorithms, not the contexts of problems.
- Make your students THINK about math! Does the answer make sense? Did
you just follow a formula that you don't understand?
- Relate questions to real-life events; "I have this problem and I need
your help, ... "(ex: use sports stats, nutrition facts, etc.)
