Principal, Little Chico Creek Elementary:
- Be a "polite, persistent pest"
Resumes:
- Don't use white paper; use an off-color that's more noticeable (light
blue, for example)
- Make it short and succinct
- No tiny writing
- Put important items in bold
- Have a photo of yourself working with children (exhibits your dynamic
with the kids)
- Add workshops attended
- Key words: integrated, CA state standards, ...
- Let your personality show in both your interview and your resume
(don't be "textbook-y")
Interview
(~20 minutes):
- Formality depends on the district
- Be yourself! What can you do at the end of the interview to show who
you are?
- Panel of interviewers (usually) - teachers, principal, parents,
...
- Make eye contact with everyone; smile!
- Look professional (don't overdo the jewelry, etc.)
- Showcase and be honest about your strengths (you are your own
salesperson!)
- Write points to yourself before you go in (items you'll want to
highlight)
- Give examples of how you've implemented strategies (don't just use
buzzwords)
Example
Questions:
- "What are your weaknesses?" - Be honest. Tell your weakness then tell
how you're improving upon this weakness.
- "Do you have any questions for us?" - Ex: "When will you make your
decision?" Don't ask about the dynamics of the school and such;
you should already know this before applying.
- "Do you have anything to say that hasn't already been discussed?"
- "Tell us a little bit about yourself." - What have you done in
addition to your coursework? Keep your statements geared towards
education.
Other
Tips:
- Be aware of the RISE Office: "unwrapping the standards" - integration
of subjects
-
Take advantage of BTSA and relationships with other teachers. MAKE
CONNECTIONS!
- During your first year, don't be afraid to decline requests to head
committees, take on extra jobs, etc. You've got enough on your plate!
- Try not to move your grade level after the first year or two. Become
familiar with the curriculum you've got.
- Be aware of available resources!!!
- If you don't get the job:
- Ask for tips to be a more viable candidate next time.
- Don't give up! Even if you don't get a position at the beginning of
the year, ... take a different position and get further experience.
- Get more experience. During track summers, ask a principal if you can
aide in a classroom to work with new age groups (ex:
three hours a day for a month.
