CSU, Chico has been providing quality coursework and programming in the area of adapted physical education for over 20 years. The Adapted Physical Activity Program provides three critical services to the community, including Adapted Physical Education Specialist Credentialing, graduate studies in Adapted Physical Activity and individualized activity programming for members of the community with disabilities.
Student assistantships and graduate assistant positions are available.
This academic program is designed for university students who would like to work with individuals with disabilities in a physical activity or recreational setting (not in the public schools). Students in this program may work in community recreational programs, health clubs, regional centers or other non-public school based programs working with individuals with disabilities.
This Specialist Credential is designed for students that are interested in teaching physical education to students with disabilities in both special education and inclusive environments within the public schools. CSU, Chico is recognized by the State of California to authorize this specialist credential.
There are two primary courses of APE study for the Masters Program in Physical Education. The Adapted Physical Education and Pedagogy course of study is designed for individuals that want to learn about teaching, learning, and curriculum as it relates to individuals with disabilities in the public schools. The Adapted Physical Education and Exercise Physiology course of study is designed for individuals whose interest is in working primarily with adults with disabilities, such as in community college settings or community based adult exercise programs.
Throughout the adapted physical activity program university students have a variety of opportunities to work with children from pre-school through high school in adapted physical education settings. These opportunities provide valuable early learning experiences for individuals seeking adapted physical education specialist credentials or masters programs with a focus on adapted physical education.
The mission of the Sensory and Motor Autism Clinic is to promote the sensory, motor, communicative, and cognitive skills of individuals with pervasive developmental disorders through a multi-sensory approach to learning.
The BE:WEL (Beyond Exercise: Wellness Enhancement for Life) program is designed for adults with disabilities and is open to the community for enrollment. Activities include weight training, aquatics, stretching, nutritional assessment, or personalized programming. The mission of the BE:WEL Program is to provide an opportunity for individuals with disabilities to take personal responsibility for their well being in an accessible supportive environment.
The mission of KIDS:PLAY (Kids Integrated Development of Skills: Parental Leadership and Advocacy for Youth) is to involve children in physical activity and social interaction. Our goal is to develop and enhance motor skills, improve self-esteem and create new learning experiences. This program provides the volunteers, participants and parents with new learning opportunities and community connections. It is a promoting, accepting and inclusive environment for all children.
