Chair’s Message
Summer 2008
Welcome to the Department of Kinesiology webpage. In this message I will outline who we are, summarize our academic programs and vision for the future, and say “thank you” to alumni and friends that help us on this journey. I hope you will take time to explore our website and learn about our exciting academic programs, research, and service.
Kinesiology is the academic study of human movement and comes from two Greek verbs meaning, to move and to study. Our motto is “moving bodies, moving minds.” We offer cutting-edge programs leading to a BA in Kinesiology, a BS in Exercise Physiology, and a MA in Kinesiology. Majors prepare for careers as physical education teacher, specialists in adapted physical education, fitness trainers, outdoor education leaders, athletic training, coaching, and professional schools in allied health professions (physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, physicians assistant). Our faculty are nationally and internationally known for their research in adapted physical education, biomechanics, exercise physiology, sport psychology, outdoor education, and physical education pedagogy. We want to build on our long-standing reputation for preparing excellent physical education teachers, so that we looked to as a national leader in preparing professionals for all exercise, sport, and human movement careers. I hope you come by and visit us and tour our state-of-the art facility in Yolo Hall.
Our vision for the future “stands on the shoulders of giants.” Some of these giants are former faculty, current faculty and students, as well as our alumni and friends. Several alumni provide input to our programs by working on our Advisory Board. Every year several hundred alumni and friends have given financially to support student scholarships, service programs, new technologies, and capital needs. On behalf of the department and students, I thank you for your generous support. We welcome your continued participation helping us build a more skillful and healthy future for everyone. Please feel free to contact us at the department office at 530-898-6373 or come by Yolo Hall and see our new tennis courts that should be completed this summer.
