Josh Trout, Ph.D.

Department Chair & Professor

Kinesiology is all about human movement and lifetime physical activity. Since I could walk, I’ve been very physically active. I grew up working on a cattle farm and was also active in basketball, track, martial arts, and weightlifting. After studying Kinesiology in college, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life immersed in this fascinating field of study. Today, I’m more physically active than ever because I find that I sleep better, stay energized, feel happier, and keep my body in good working condition so I can enjoy life to the fullest.

I was fortunate in elementary and high school that my physical education teachers and coaches taught me how to enjoy exercise and use physical activity to stay healthy. My life goal is to share that same “gift” of physical activity with others so they have the opportunity to improve their own health, happiness, and overall quality of life. We only get one body in life to get us around so we have to take very good care of it.

Before I was elected as chair in spring 2014, I spent 11 years as a faculty member teaching students about motor skill acquisition, exercise prescription, and physical education. As chair, I now have the same mission as before of promoting lifetime physical activity, but now I do it in a support role from the administrative side rather than in the classroom. I live, work, and breathe Kinesiology, so it’s an honor to educate students about something I love so much and that will help them improve their health and quality of life.
