The Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Physiology

Overview

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Physiology is intended to provide students with in-depth study of the physiological bases of human physical performance. In addition to the required courses in the major, many students who complete this option take additional courses in biology and chemistry especially if pursuing a Pre-Professional emphasis. Students in this option also may chose to complete the Certificate in Sport and Human Performance. Students who complete this option are qualified to sit for various professional certifications, such as those offered through the American College of Sports Medicine or the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Pre-Professional (Allied Health) Concentration

This concentration in the Department of Kinesiology allows students upon graduation to enter professional schools, which are often master's degree programs. The requirements of schools offering programs in Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Chiropractic Medicine and Occupational Therapy vary considerably. It is best to contact schools that you are interested in applying to and checks with them regarding their entry requirements and pre-requisites. Consult with your advisor to develop a plan of course work based upon your career objectives and goals. Students are strongly encouraged to contact the schools they intend on applying to and obtain the current pre-requisites for admission as early as possible (preferably by the end of their sophomore year). Most schools require course work in chemistry, math, physics, English/literature/composition, human physiology, psychology, biology/zoology, statistics and social sciences.

The concentration in Clinical Exercise Science is designed for these students. In addition to the required exercise science courses, these students take additional coursework that focuses primarily on the use of exercise in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Many students who will complete this option are qualified to sit for the American College of Sports Medicine Exercise Specialist Certification. This certification, and others, in combination with the student’s academic training, provides excellent credentials for employment in wellness programs, cardiovascular rehabilitation, and many commercial fitness facilities.
