LOCAL NOTES:
590 and 599 FIELDS
What to put in 590s and 599s
590 Field:
- Put notes specific to the library's copy in the 590 note
- Samples of notes that have gone in 590 notes in
monograph records:
- "HELD IN..." notes e.g. HELD IN SPECIAL COLLECTIONS"
- "ALSO ON MICROFICHE"
- "OTHER COPIES IN REFERENCE"
Note: Whenever possible, put "Held in" notes in subfield "L" of
the 049 field (on OCLC), or subfield "a" of the 945 field (in
Horizon, if no 049 exists in record)
599 Field:
- Put initials and dates (see 599 field)
- Put staff-only information, such as processing notes,
important acquisition notes, route-to notes (including the routing
of encyclopedia sets)
- Any other information that would be important for technical
services staff to be aware of.
599 notes are like shelf-list notes. They appear only in the
cataloging module of the StaffPac, and not to the public
