AACR2 provides for the liberal application of added entries for joint authors, illustrators, translators, etc. LC and other OCLC participants are not always consistent in the provision of such entries and may not always make important added entries.
One obvious case is in biographical or critical works about individual artists. If a work contains a significant number of reproductions of an artist's work, the artist should receive both a 600 (added subject) and a 700 (added author) entry. LC frequently fails to provide the 700 even though the artist made a significant contribution to the work, and patrons wishing to see reproductions of an artist's work would be well served by an added entry.
Another common case is collaborations between authors and illustrators or photographers. The main entry should be under the author with a 700 for the illustrator/photographer when the illustrations form a significant part of the work.
A third common occurrence has to do with works of fiction, drama, or poetry in translation. In these cases an added entry for translator is almost always appropriate. Translator added entries for nonfiction are rarely made.
If you encounter a record where an added entry for the artist, illustrator, photographer, or translator might be appropriate but is not present in the record, please place the book on the referral shelf. As in other cases, provide your initials and the reason for the referral.
