When you encounter two or more call numbers in the 050 field of an OCLC record for an item you are cataloging, you must decide which call number to use. Generally, the choices are between 1) a call number for an analyzed series and a more specific subject call number and 2) a Z1200+ call number and the more specific subject call number.
"Reference Weeding Z Call Numbers"
We have recently begun to receive books from reference that are being removed from the "Z" section of the Reference Collection. The volumes that are to be transfered somewhere else in the library should retain their "Z" class number unless the number is 5000 or greater. It should then be assigned a subject-specific class number.
This is a different cutoff than we use for regular cataloging. It applies to this project only. Setting the limit to 5000 allows inclusion of national bibliographies.
