POLICY
see also: Analyzed Serials
The following statement summarizes the intent of various sections of the Cataloging Guidelines.
Whenever possible, it is the policy of the department to treat individual titles in monographic series [and sets] as separate publications with respect to descriptive cataloging and subject access. Call number decisions are made on a case by case basis. In general it is the policy of the Bibliographic Services Department to provide generous access to library materials.
Whenever detailed analysis using separate records is not advisable, contents of work will be given in a note and access fields for the contents will be provided for distinctive information [in CLCat Keyword indexes, "contents notes" are indexed]
It is not the policy of the department to undertake to recatalog materials which have not received good analytic cataloging as a general, systematic activity. The department welcomes suggestions from other library units concerning the need for recataloging of specific materials in order to bring out their full contents.
