ANALYZED SERIALS

POLICY

The decision to analyze a serials title is made by each individual library, most following current LC policy with some in-house exceptions. A formal policy does not exist at the Meriam Library but the following are the present guidelines:

Individual issues of the serial have their own monographic title and author in addition to the ongoing title & numbering system of the serial title.

LC copy exists for analyzed serial.

Each issue has a distinct subject focus.

Each issue has a sizeable number of pages.

Each issue is likely to be cited as a monograph in literature rather than indexed in standard indexes as a serial.

A bibliographic record is created for the serial title (see example attached).

Each individual issue is also cataloged as a monograph and given the classification number of the serial (a lead record may or may not be used) followed by the individual issue number.

The serial title appears in the series statement on the individual monographic record and is traced as an access point.

The individual issues are added to the serials holdings records (summary statement on lead record if there is a lead record). Individual issues are generally bound in volumes and circulate.
