Call Numbers

Books such as Places rated almanac or The book of American city rankings are designed to help members of the general public decide where to live, look for work, etc. LC has been very inconsistent in the application of call numbers and subject headings. At the reasonable request of the Reference Department are reclassifying all of them into one number (HN60) and assigning two consistent subject headings:
Some books, e.g. Retirement places rated, will have additional relevant headings.
If you are cataloging new city ratings books, please be sure to class them in HN60 and include at least the two standard subject headings above.
Other books are primarily compilations of statistics for the use of social scientists or other scholars in their research. Because they are sometimes very specific and the subjects vary, it's okay that these have differing call numbers and subject headings. Most, though, should have the subject heading "Social indicators" subdivided by place whenever appropriate.
If you have any questions about a specific book being cataloged please place it on the cataloging questions referral shelf.
