DISCARDING BOOKS

Last edited: Nov. 20, 1992

As the Weeding Project progresses, there will be a large number of discarded books to box up. Because of the number of people that have requested access to various categories of discarded books, it is very important that we categorize and box separately the various books we are discarding.

There are essentially 3 categories of discarded material

  1. .Weeding Project

These books are all from the collection-wide weeding project that Sarah Blakeslee is in charge of. These books are being processed by students now (except for some problems) These books have already been reviewed by librarians and Friends of the Library and will therefore be sent to property as often as possible.

  2. . Curriculum, Other Friends of the Library selections

The curriculum books need to be reviewed by Friends of the Library for their book sales. They will be taken to a room on the first floor in the Reserve Services Area, so are not initially taken to Property. The books that the Friends have selected from the weeding project (marked with white slips) are boxed and labeled "For Friends of the Library". These, too, will go to the room on the first floor.

  3. . General Library Discards

These are all the materials that do not fall into the previous categories. They need to be reviewed by librarians before they are sent to property.

The upshot is: if you are discarding material that has been referred to you for discard, put the books in boxes labeled "LIBRARY DISCARDS"

If you are discarding books that have been referred to you from the Weeding Project, put them in boxes labeled "WEEDING PROJECT"

If you are discarding any type of Curriculum material, put them in boxes labeled "CURRICULUM DISCARDS - FOR FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY".

Because of constraints of room, we want to keep these categories physically separated.

The "LIBRARY DISCARDS" will be kept in a row directly between the desk with the typewriter (2 or 3 feet away from supply cabinent)

The "WEEDING PROJECT" boxes will be kept in a row next the processing shelves and flattened boxes.

The 'CURRICULUM-FRIENDS OF LIBRARY" boxes will be kept against the wall next to the drinking fountain.

Please stack the boxes 3 high and try to leave them in a single row.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When you make up new boxes, make sure that you tape the flaps on the bottom with strapping tape (or until we get strapping tape, clear book tape) rather than folding and interlocking the flaps. Plant Ops will not accept them unless they are taped!!!!!
