TREATMENT OF EDITIONS

POLICY

Last updated: Nov. 30, 1989

Preliminary processing of editions.

Ideally, new books should be checked to see whether they are editions or variants of books already in the library. Books on the NEW BOOKS SHELVES should be examined to see whether there is information in the book concerning earlier or variant editions. If the book contains a definite edition statement (a numbered edition higher than 1, the wording "revised", "expanded", "abridged", "extracted from", etc.) this denotes that a previous work related to the item in hand exists.

The library's holdings should be checked to determined whether the previous work is already in the collection.

Search CLSI under the title of the original or earlier work. If it is found make printout of that record and refer book to the Editions Decision shelf in Acquisitions. All previous editions are now being checked for retention or discard]
