The General Material Designation (or GMD) is used in titles of material of non-book material such as [sound recording], [filmstrip], [kit], [chart], etc.
The GMD appears in a #h after the main title in a title field (comes before a subtitle in #b)
While the GMD should appear with brackets whereever it is used, CLSI at this time does not automatically create brackets. You must supply brackets in a subfield 'h' when you send the record to CLSI or brackets will not appear.
GMDs are mandatory for field 245 for nonprint media formats. Therefore these instructions apply for the most part to records of non-print items (including those that are in the curriculum collection), although you should be aware of #h used for other types of material.
GMDs are not used in Map Cataloging
