A decision has been made to catalog the majority of these nursing publications as separate monographs so they may be more accessible to library users. A few titles will be cataloged as a serial. Some of these materials will be shelved in Reference. These decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.
The Publications of the National League of Nursing and the Publications of the American Nurses Association have been handled as 2 serial titles with very basic bibliographic records and a very large number of item records each. (NLN publications has 26 screens of items on CLCAT, for instance).
Each publication is made up of individually titled volumes with distinct "Pub. Nos." These numbers are recorded as part of the item call number. For instance, National League of Nursing's publication "Education for Nursing: the Diploma Way" has Pub. No. 16-1314. An example of these call numbers:
A problem is that some titles are issued periodically (annually, or some other frequency) with its own Pub. No. For instance the library had the 1986-87 edition of "Education for Nursing: The Diploma Way." When we received the 88-89 edition, we did not know we already had the earlier edition. Using the Pub. No. on the new edition (16-1314) we of course ended up with 2 different volumes having the same call number.
It has been decided that when the library receives a volume of either of these two serials (American Nursing Association & National League of Nursing;), the new volume's Pub. No. should be checked against the the list of item call numbers for possible duplications. If an existing volume does have the same Pub. No. as the new volume, and if the old volume is an earlier edition of the new volume, the existing volume will be removed from the collection.
