GUIDELINES FOR IDENTIFYING SERIAL FROM PIECE

  1. Date, volume number, or alpha (A,B,C, etc.) on issue.

  2. Issue contains a generic term in the title: proceedings, bulletin, journal, transactions, review, report, publication, etc.

  3. Issue contains a frequency term such as "annual," "biennial," etc. or a term denoting it is issued on a regular basis, "yearbook," "annual report" etc.

  4. Information in preface, forward, etc. indicates there will be future updates or that previous volumes were published under the same or different title.

  5. Format is loose-leaf, implying possible updates.

  6. Pseudoserials - editions published so frequently that they lend themseleves to serials treatment. Frequently personal authors are so connected with the work that the personal name becomes part of title (Ulrich's international periodicals directory, Gregg's shorthand manual, etc.)
