* Student Personnel Employment Opportunities *

Thank you for your interest in student employment with the Meriam Library at CSU, Chico. Library student employment, as a complement to your formal academic education, can be a rewarding experience. The information contained in this web site is designed to assist you in determining if you wish to pursue student employment with the library and to guide you through the application process. 

 

The Meriam Library maintains a substantial student workforce throughout the academic year, and during the summer and winter months when regular classes are not in session. On average, the library employs over 100 Chico State students. These valued employees work in a number of specialized units, in various *positions which call for a range of skills from light clerical to technical. These skills are determined, implemented, and supervised by the library staff within the various units, with each unit overseeing and performing a specific set of library operations. 

As such, student employees have numerous opportunities to apply their personal skills and contribute to the smooth and efficient operation of the library. The friendly and qualified staff of the Meriam Library's Student Personnel Management Team is directed by the Director of Student Personnel, Kathleen Purvis, and is available to assist you in the application process. Employment Overview
University - All students will be hired in accordance with the Student Employment Office - California State University, Chico Policies and Procedures for Work-Study and Student Assistant Classifications.

Library - As a student at CSU, Chico, you are encouraged to keep in mind that your number one focus must be the achievement of your academic goals. If you choose to accept employment with the library, it should be with the clear understanding that you have carefully considered your academic commitments and your financial needs, and in doing so have determined that you can succeed with both your college education and your job. 

It is expected that you, as a committed student, understand the importance of maintaining the library at its highest possible degree of proficiency. The members of the University Community -- students, staff, faculty, and administration -- as the library's customers, have a need to access in a timely fashion the information contained in the library's electronic and paper formats, with all library units playing an equally important role in making this possible. As a library employee, it will be your responsibility to help ensure that the patrons' needs are being met. You will be expected to fulfill your part by presenting yourself in a professional and courteous manner, by being to work on time, and by performing your assigned responsibilities with a high degree of accuracy. 

Library Units: 
Student employment is available in various departments called library units. The duties performed by these employees vary from unit to unit. For example, some units have substantial interaction with the library's patrons, while others have very little. Also, work hours may vary from unit to unit. Most, but not all, technical units utilize their student employees between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (Monday through Friday), while public service units typically operate seven days a week, from 7:30 a.m. until midnight, or in the case of the extended hours operation, around the clock. You are encouraged to discuss your individual needs with the unit supervisor with whom you interview prior to accepting employment. 

Meriam Library Student Employee Pay Structure: 
All classification levels and wage rates for Meriam Library are in accordance with the California State University, Chico Student Employee Classification Levels and Wage Rates document. 

Meriam Library 

Library Student Employees - Students hired to perform general library related duties are hired at the Student Employee II, Step 1 classification. 

Student Supervisors – Students initially promoted into the Student Supervisor position will be paid at either the Student Employee III, Step 1 classification or the Student Employee IV rate.  The classification determination is based on the level of responsibility and job duties performed. 

Technical Employees – Positions filled under the “technical” heading will be paid at the beginning rate of either the Student Employee II, Step 1 classification level or Student Employee III, Step 1 classification level.  The classification determination is based on the level of responsibility and job duties performed.
