Services Provided:
The Building Management/Stack Operations Unit provides four distinct services
to the Meriam Library:
First, as Building Management, it maintains responsibility for the daily management,
upkeep, and security of the facility.
Second, as Stack Operations, it is responsible for the continuous maintenance
and upkeep of the collections housed in the open areas of the building. This
includes returning circulated materials to their respective locations; shelf-reading
the collection to ensure proper placement of materials; and assisting patrons,
faculty, and staff in a variety of library related requests.
Third, responsible for the Periodical Reading Room and microform collections,
it provides assistance to patrons, faculty, and staff in finding and/or obtaining
periodicals and newspaper in current, bound, and microform formats. It maintains
the daily operations and maintenance of the collections that are housed in the
Reading Room and the microform collection housed on the open floor. Operations
in these areas include assisting patrons, continuously shelving browsed materials,
processing new materials that are added to the collection, shelf-reading the
collection for proper placement, cleaning and light maintenance of copy machines
and reader/printer equipment, and maintaining a variety of statistics on use
of the collection.
Fourth, as Student Personnel, it directs the personnel
and budget process for student employees within the library.

Employee Classification:
Student Employee I & II (stacks)
Number of Students Employed : 25 to 30 depending
on time of year.
Description of Duties : Building Management/Stack
Operations student employees retrieve books from sorting areas and return them
to the location as designated by their respective call numbers; shelf-read the
collection to ensure accurate placement of materials; pick-up materials left
lying in the open areas of the library; observe patrons for adherence to library
policies; provide access accommodations such as retrieval of materials; provide
receptionist coverage upon request; and perform project work as requested.
Experience Required : No previous library experience required. However, a basic test to determine
a person's ability to interpret a variety of call number systems is administered
prior to hire.
Student Employee IV (Supervisor)

Description of Duties :
Employees at this level are student supervisors. They perform all duties of
the Student Employee Is and IIs in addition to their supervisory responsibilities.
Supervisory duties include: preparing the building to be opened and closed every
day; scheduling and supervising all student employees; leading an emergency
evacuation of all four floors of the building; dealing with an array of problems
ranging from addressing patrons bringing food and drink into the building to
conducting emergency first aid, including CPR; training and supervision of Reading
Room personnel, statistical records keeping, troubleshooting of microform equipment,
providing refunds to patron as necessary, and a variety of projects as assigned.
Experience Required :
Student supervisors are promoted from within and have spent a significant amount
of time working as a Building Management/Stack Operations student employee.
Work Hours:
Building Management/Stack Operations employees work a minimum of 12 hours per
week and a maximum of 20 hours per week during both the fall and spring semesters.
During regular hours of operation, staffing includes one staff member, one student
supervisor, and four or five student employees. Student employees are required
to work any combination of two openings, closings, or weekend shifts. All employees
are guaranteed one day off each weekend.
