"I decided to take online courses as a means to get a BA. Being single, working full time and living in Grass Valley, does not allow me the luxury of being a student on campus in Chico or anywhere else. Upon completion of my AA at Sierra College, I chose Chico to continue my education because of their satellite at Sierra College. From there I branched into online classes. There is no way I could complete my BA without these resources and I am very thankful for the opportunity. As far as online education, it is wonderful. I do miss the interaction that occurs in a classroom setting, but there are opportunities to meet fellow students through e-mail and WebCT. I am currently in my third online class and I really enjoy the freedom of being able to participate in learning experiences according to my schedule. WebCT also allows video presentations of the classroom setting. In either case, I feel that I have learned as much or maybe more from my online classes that my in classroom experiences. The professors have provided excellent guidance and resources to do the assignments. It has been a very pleasurable experience and I look forward to future classes online."

"When I first signed up for WebCT, I had serious reservations about this learning technique. I believed that I would not receive the support that I would from an in-class instructor. A friend of mine chided me for taking a computer class. He said that I would not get the same quality of information that he got from attending class and that computer delivered classes were "freebies," meaning that I would not work as hard as he did. My friend was wrong. I believe I learned more with this format than I would have by attending class. I also received more individual attention from the instructor. The instructor was always an e-mail message away for answering questions or solving problems. I had more contact with the instructor in this format than in any classroom course I have attended. The class was challenging and worthwhile because I was responsible for setting my own schedule and developing my own goals for learning. I live almost two hours from Chico. Had it not been for WebCT, I would not have been able to take the classes I needed to graduate. I highly recommend WebCT to anyone considering it."

"Online learning enables the student to attend classes from the comfort of their home. There are no concerns with commuting or parking. I enjoyed a California History course I attended online at Chico State. The completion of the course allowed me to obtain degree requirement courses I needed for graduation. The class participated in addressing topics assigned by the professor through bulletin board posts. The posts were varied and provided the same material as a live classroom discussion. Written assignments were sent by e-mail. We had a group assignment to complete and turn in with two other classmates. One lived 30 miles away and the other 200. We worked on the assignment by e-mail attachments with one student collating the work and submitting it by e-mail and snail mail. The paper turned out just as good as if we had worked on it in person. Online learning allowed me to be "in class" on my schedule, which was often at midnight. Other students could participate on their schedules as well since this was an asynchronous class setting. The instructor's lectures and topics could be downloaded as text or sound. He provided Net links so students could obtain further information on the given topic. Completed assignments were returned within a day or two with feedback and scores, much faster than traditional academia. A word of caution: Don't procrastinate. Establish a schedule and complete assignments just as in the traditional setting. It is very easy to not to "attend" class and then find yourself hopelessly behind. What a great way to either complete or get started on that degree you always wanted but couldn't fit it into your schedule. I encourage anyone to explore online learning opportunities; just make sure it is from a legitimate learning institution and not a diploma mill. You don't need to be a computer tech person to enjoy it."
