The prospects for teaching in California are very good. Education leaders predict a need for many qualified teachers in California in the coming years. Entry-level teachers can expect better salaries, improved benefits packages, and greater opportunity for professional development.

Consider the following facts:

California teachers are retiring. Each year many California teachers will reach retirement age. As veteran teachers retire the California Teacher's Association predict a large shortage of teachers.

Reduction of class size. As part of an effort to improve the quality of teaching in public schools, federal and state educational policymakers have recognized a need to reduce class size. Lower student-teacher ratios will compound the need for more teachers nationwide, according to the National Education Association.

By completing your liberal studies degree online, you will be on your way to entering a growing and much-needed profession. Visit the Web sites below to further explore the challenges and opportunities of the teaching career.

California Center for Teaching Careers (CalTeach) -

Established by the California legislature in 1997, the CalTeach site provides a wealth of information for the prospective teacher. On the Applicants page you will find links that expand on what it takes to teach, job search databases, an adviser hotline and other resources available to future teachers.

California Teachers Association (CTA) -

The CTA represents the interests of more than 200,000 educators in California. Explore the CTA Web site to learn about current educational issues, information, and prospects. The CTA site is also a good indication of the organized professional support available to California teachers.

National Education Association (NEA) -

The NEA represents the interests of more than 2.5 million teachers nationwide. The NEA Web site provides an overview of current challenges and opportunities in the teaching profession. The NEA site is also a good indication of the organized professional support available to our nation's teachers.

CalStateTEACH -

CalStateTEACH is an online teacher certification program available from the California State University. After completing your Liberal Studies degree online, this site provides a means to receive your teaching credential, also online. Visit the CalStateTEACH site to learn how.
