Webpages and Sites:
MERLOT is one site that didnt fit neatly into any of the categories.MERLOT is a wonderful repository for a variety of online learning materials that originated in our own CSU.

CanCore, short for Canadian Core Learning Resource Metadata Specification, is another group like Merlot worth keeping an eye on. This is an attempt to create a protocol to describe all multimedia educational objects. Related to this is "CAREO - Campus Alberta Repository of Educational Objects - CAREO is in the process on creating an online repository of online educational objects and has been central in creating the CanCore protocol." Unfortunately the Cancore link says its forbidden right now, so I cant tell you more.

Comments and Observations and Reflections
On Graphics : After bouncing around the web looking checking out graphics sites we got the impression that the most fruitful searches will be more focused searches, looking for images for specific topics. There are just too many sites out there to deal with otherwise. There is also a big problem of stolen images in many of the collections that we have looked at.

On Resources: Resources tend to be aimed at sales to businesses, especially with Stock Photo companies or they are aimed at consumers of pop culture entertainment products, especially with audio and video. A much smaller portion seems to be aimed at educators and education institutions, and these tend to be for K-12 and not higher education. This is unfortunate as the Internet did originate largely with educational researches. Like so much in America, the emphasis has become on mass entertainment and business profits.

Many US government agencies have free materials available on their websites. It is worth investigating to see if any agencies have materials for your academic area.

There are many, many icon and clip arts sites. Most are junk with enough animations to make your head spin.

Clip art: simple black and white drawings good to use as inline graphics on paper documents.

An observation- Radiology depts. and University Ag extension offices often are leaders in the web and imagery.

Public Domain Report - newsletter for subscribers about images and more in the public domain. More for subscribers.

On Music Formats: A web page that explains the difference between MIDI and Wave files.

Resources from Textbook Publishers
Many textbook publishers offer supplemental web pages and/or CD-ROMS for their products. Visit their web sites to see what is available. For CSU Chico Faculty, James Tyler is available to help you find out more information about these materials.

Learning Objects
Technically all of the materials in the Digital Media Bank could be learning objects, but learning objects as a topic unto itself has taken off recently.
See http://www.csuchico.edu/lcmt/learningobjects for more information.
