Linking to Journal Articles, eBooks, and eReserves in BlackBoard Vista and web pages
NOTICE: the proxy server address will change in the upcoming year, and faculty are encouraged to start updating their links to library materials now. The new address to use is: http://mantis.csuchico.edu/login?url=
In this website you will find instructions on how to link to
materials provided by the Meriam Library in BlackBoard Vista 4.2 and any of your web sites.
Because of licensing agreements and copyright, please remind
your students that library materials are for class use only. If
you are not using BlackBoard Vista, please use measures that limit access
to students enrolled in your class.
Often the process of obtaining a link and using it in an online
course is as simple as copying the URL from the address bar of
your browser, attaching the proxy address, and pasting it into
a web page. However, be aware that this process does not work
in all cases, and often you must use alternatives. For example,
some databases like Academic Search require that you use the database's built- in link generator.
How to construct links
Step by step
instructions are provided here for linking to (1) journal
articles (2) electronic
books and materials in (3) electronic
reserves. You will be shown how to obtain the links, add the
proxy address necessary for off-campus users, and how to add the
links to Bb Vista or other web pages that you are using.
For detailed information on how you can use DOIs (digital object identifers) and OpenURLs to construct links for your courses (in addition to persistent links) see the papers
by Tyler
(2004) and Langston
and Tyler (2004). For a recount of an experiment here at Chico on constructing
online coursepacks done in cooperation with our bookstore see
the paper by Tyler in DEOSNEWS
(2004).
For additional information about linking see this list
of publications.
