Campus Greeting from President Hutchinson

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students:

On July 1st, I took office as President of Chico State, our University. Knowing the University was closed on my first day, I visited campus earlier to secure keys and a parking pass, just as all new employees do when joining the University community. Last week was productive with several activities including:

  • a meeting with Vice President of Advancement, Ahmad Boura, and recording statements for the capital campaign,
  • touring campus,
  • stopping by to greet the faculty leaders and teachers participating in the Teacher Leadership Academy for Science and Math,
  • joining Drs. Hassenzahl, Kelly, Miller and V.P. Boura to provide a welcome at the College of Natural Sciences Summer Research Reception,
  • attending a reception hosted by the City of Chico and enjoying the company of several council members and city staff,
  • attending a Rotary meeting,
  • working with Rebecca Berner to record a digital welcome for our students and their families attending summer orientation.

Over Memorial Day weekend, when my partner Linda and I moved to Chico, we spent the first few weeks of June getting settled.  Of course, we have enjoyed Chico’s restaurants, stores and farmers market. We’ve reconnected with old friends and colleagues, and made many new acquaintances. Everyone we’ve met has been warm and welcoming. We feel fortunate to be back home!

Today, I walked campus saying hello to staff, students, faculty and administrators.  I will continue to walk campus, meeting as many of you as possible this summer. I also plan to meet with many of you formally in the coming days to hear from you about our strengths and areas for improvement.

Chico State is a strong University. For our students, The Chico Experience is defined by our outstanding academic, co-curricular and support programs. It is also defined by our personal caring and commitment for student success. I look forward to working with each and every one of you as we embrace the strengths of our University and set direction for its future. Together, we will build a shared vision!
