Curriculum Frameworks

The legal basis for curriculum frameworks can be found in the California Education Code. The general philosophy can be found in section 51002: "...because of the common needs and interests of the citizens of this state, there is a need to establish a common curriculum for the public schools...." Section 51002 goes on to state "...it is the intent of the Legislature to set broad minimum standards and guidelines for educational programs..."

A curriculum framework as defined by section 60028 is "...an outline of the components of a given course of study designed to provide state direction to school districts in the provision of instructional programs."

Curriculum frameworks give statements of objectives and the concepts to be developed in the curriculum. They are useful for material selections, curriculum planning, and program evaluation.
