About the Kindle eBook Reader Trial:
The Meriam Library offers Amazon Kindle eBook readers
for checkout to CSU, Chico students, faculty and staff. Courtesy patrons and non-affiliated users are not eligible. The Kindles come with carrying cases, USB cables/power adapters and use a proprietary format that restricts content to titles purchased from Amazon.com.
What Kindle Titles Are Available? Look HERE.
We will be adding titles to our Kindles on a regular basis. These titles will be in the Library Catalog. You can search for a particular title to see if it is on the Kindle. You can also review a list of Kindle titles here
by looking at the "Added Author
" portion of the bibliographic record.
Borrowing a Kindle and Loan Period:
Kindles are checked out from the Circulation/Reserve counter on the 1st floor. They must be returned to a library employee at the Circulation/Reserve counter -- not the book drop. Due to the limited number of Kindles and the high demand, the loan period is 7 days but may be renewed if no one else has requested to use it.
Fines and Replacement Fees & Refunds:
Due to the popularity, late fees are $10 per day to a maximum of $70. Any Kindle that is overdue will be declared lost after 7 days. Charges will be based on the cost of the Kindle & its accessories plus fines and processing fees. If the Kindle is returned within six months from the date of payment in "good working order" the item cost and processing fee may be refunded. The fines will not be forgiven. The cost of and items in a Kindle set are:
- Kindle $139
- Case $35
- USB cable/power adapter $20
- Processing Fee $10 per item (Kindle, case, cable)
- Overdue fine $70 maximum for set
- Total Replacement Fee: $294 maximum
You are responsible for any damage done to the Kindle while it is checked out to you, and will be charged a damage fee based on the damage up to the cost of replacement. Also, you will be charged the replacement fee if a Kindle is reported missing or stolen while checked out to your account.
Adding Other Materials:
If you are interested in adding additional items to a Kindle including books, newspapers and magazines you can register the Kindle to your own Amazon account while borrowing it. Please note that the Kindle will be reset once returned.
